Hell, you only need region control so your farmers can generate taxes. Outside of that they are meaningless.
Dear and honored friend, please do not tell me that even ones of such dignity as yourselves are willing to be pulled into the darkness that is this state of mind? Surely you cannot believe that any entity, much less those as massive as BoB and others of the like, are anything as powerful without dedicated platforms of operations and industry?
I find myself growing faint at the mere though that those whom we consider to be the newest and strongest rising power could be brought so low of mind and spirit as to take in and believe the dreadnaughtful nonsense that is the victory-through-defeat theorem. Smaller parties of operations such as dedicated pirates and various mercenary groups may be fine with simply POSs scattered about (though I doubt it would be any sort of strength) but to preserve the important foundations of such super-massive alliances and coalitions as BoB and sundry others requires that they be able to depend on a large array of resources, and this only comes through the possession of key territory.
Aside from the necessity of a settled and dependable base of operations, one must take into consideration the inspiration that is a homeland. Who will fight to the death with nothing to be gained? No protracted wars can be fought without a goal, insanity ignored, and no man will push forward unless they know there is something worth pushing for waiting at the end of their fight. A homeless man has nothing to defend, honor is not sufficient premises, because honor provides neither money for ships nor weaponry, as well as these, honor will not welcome you with open ship bays at the end of the day, when you are most tired and in need of comfort and rest.
Your warriors will garner no wages from their random pirating, and that which they do collect over time, the meager sum that it is, will never be a resource on which they can depend, and with out a dependable source of supplies comes fear and hesitation. Who will fight when they no not from where their next ship will come from? Who can fight will no guns? Who will fight with no shielding and armor to protect them from the ravages of their enemies and the harsh, cold vacuum of space? No man will. Even the mad will see when they have nothing, and it will crush them as fast as poverty crushes the capable.
The homeless are as weak as the friendless, and both will fall the the rich. For these reasons, an entity will never become stronger by losing that which they once called their own. Poverty, loneliness, and no object of motivation will devour a fighting force faster than an enemy's forces could ever hope to match.
I was going to say 'forum warrior', but no. You die a lot. Good job.
